Climbing to the Stern of the Ship
Dutchmans Stern is a massive flat-topped bluff near the town of Quorn in the southern Flinders Ranges. Its name derives from its appearance — viewed from certain angles, the bluff resembles the stern of a Dutch sailing ship. The Dutchmans Stern Hike is a ten-kilometre return walk that climbs to the top of this dramatic formation, delivering panoramic views across the Flinders Ranges, Spencer Gulf, and the flat pastoral land that stretches west to the horizon.
The conservation park protects significant vegetation communities and provides habitat for wildlife including euros, wedge-tailed eagles, and a variety of arid-adapted bird species. The trail passes through different vegetation zones as it climbs — from open woodland at the base through shrubland on the slopes to the wind-exposed plateau on the summit.
The Walk
The trail begins at the car park off Arden Vale Road and follows a well-marked route to the summit plateau. The climbing sections earn the intermediate rating, but the trail is well-maintained and the gradients are manageable for walkers with reasonable fitness. The summit plateau provides the payoff — vast views in every direction that capture the essence of the Flinders Ranges landscape.
