Cliff-Top Views from the Fleurieu’s Southern Coast

On the southern coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, where the land drops dramatically into the Southern Ocean, Newland Head Conservation Park protects a landscape of long beaches, rocky headlands, and rolling coastal hills. The Ridgeway Hill Loop Hike is a six-kilometre trail that follows the rolling hills and rugged cliffs above the coast, delivering panoramic views across Encounter Bay, the Pages Islands in Backstairs Passage, and the distant profile of Kangaroo Island — a view that connects you with the same seascape that greeted Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin when their ships met in these waters in April 1802.

The park protects two long beaches — Waitpinga and Parsons — that are popular destinations for surfing and beach fishing, though strong rips and hidden gutters make them unsuitable for swimming. The surrounding coastal vegetation supports a diverse community of native plants adapted to the salt spray and fierce winds of the southern coast, creating a landscape that is as botanically interesting as it is scenically dramatic.

The Walk

The trail loops through the rolling hills above the coast, following the ridgeline to viewpoints where the panorama extends from the sweep of Waitpinga Beach to Encounter Bay and beyond. On clear days, Kangaroo Island is visible across Backstairs Passage, and the Pages — small rocky islands in the passage — stand as navigation markers just as they did for the early European explorers.

The intermediate rating reflects the rolling terrain — the trail climbs and descends as it follows the ridgeline, and some sections along the cliff edge require attention in windy conditions. The coastal vegetation through which the trail passes includes native grasses, low heath, and wind-sculpted shrubs that frame the views and provide habitat for the birdlife that patrols these coastal hills.

Planning Your Walk

The trail begins at Waitpinga Campground within Newland Head Conservation Park. Camping is available for those wanting to extend their visit — set up camp and enjoy the distant sound of waves rolling onto the beach. The park is located near Victor Harbor on the Fleurieu Peninsula, approximately 80 kilometres south of Adelaide. Combine the walk with beach fishing at Waitpinga or Parsons Beach.

The Ridgeway Hill Loop Hike delivers the southern Fleurieu at its most dramatic — cliff-top walking above a coast where the Southern Ocean meets the land with unrelenting force. The views across Encounter Bay to Kangaroo Island connect you with the maritime history that gave this coast its name, while the wind and the waves remind you that this is one of the most powerful coastlines in Australia.
