Adelaide’s First Dedicated Veloway
The Patrick Jonker Veloway is a 5-kilometre dedicated cycling path located in Adelaide’s southern suburbs, running between Daws Road at Mitcham and South Road at Edwardstown. Named in honour of South Australian cycling champion Patrick Jonker, a former professional road cyclist who represented Australia at multiple Tour de France events, the veloway provides a fast, car-free route for commuters and recreational cyclists alike.
Unlike shared-use paths, the Patrick Jonker Veloway is designed exclusively for cycling, offering a smooth sealed surface and a consistent, uninterrupted riding experience. The trail runs alongside the Noarlunga Centre to City Busway corridor, making it one of the few dedicated cycling infrastructures in metropolitan Adelaide that prioritises speed and separation from pedestrian traffic.
The Route
The veloway begins at Daws Road in Mitcham and heads north through the southern suburbs, following the busway corridor. The path is one-directional, and separate lanes are provided for each direction of travel. Riders enjoy a smooth, flat to gently undulating surface with minimal stops, making it ideal for those looking to build speed and fitness without the interruptions of traffic lights or pedestrian crossings.
The surrounding area transitions from established residential suburbs to light industrial zones as the trail approaches South Road at Edwardstown. Along the way, connections to local street networks allow cyclists to join the veloway from several access points throughout the corridor.
Getting There
The veloway is accessible by public transport, with bus services running along South Road and Daws Road. On-street parking is available near both endpoints. Cyclists connecting from the city can access the veloway via the Torrens Linear Park path network or South Road cycling lanes.
