Birdwatching on the Murray River Floodplain

The Ngak Indau Wetland Trail is a gentle 2.6-kilometre walk that begins on the banks of the River Murray and winds through the Ngak Indau wetlands within the Katarapko section of Murray River National Park. This trail is designed for birdwatchers — it includes a purpose-built bird hide positioned for optimal viewing of the wetland birdlife that congregates in the floodplain habitat, making it one of the best accessible birdwatching experiences in the Riverland region.

Murray River National Park protects over 13,000 hectares of Murray River wetlands and floodplains across three separate sections. Katarapko, where this trail is located, features black box-covered floodplains and wetlands alive with aquatic bird species. The Ngak Indau wetlands are part of the Katfish Reach community environmental rehabilitation project, identified as a priority floodplain for environmental flows and native fish rehabilitation — a landscape that is actively being restored to its ecological potential.

The Walk

The trail winds from the riverbank through the wetland system, passing through the floodplain vegetation communities that characterise this section of the Murray River. Black box eucalypts line the outer edges of the floodplain, giving way to river red gums along the waterways. The bird hide provides a sheltered observation point where you can sit quietly and watch the wetland come to life — herons, egrets, ibis, cormorants, and dozens of other waterbird species use these wetlands for feeding, roosting, and breeding.

The wetland’s value for birdlife is directly linked to the water management that maintains its health. Environmental water deliveries to the Katarapko floodplain have been a key part of the Murray-Darling Basin Plan’s efforts to restore critical habitat along the river. Walking through Ngak Indau, you can see the results of these investments — healthy vegetation, active bird populations, and a wetland ecosystem that is functioning as it should.

Planning Your Walk

Murray River National Park — Katarapko section is located near Berri and Glossop in the Riverland. The trail is flat, easy, and suitable for all fitness levels. Bring binoculars for the best birdwatching experience at the hide. The trail connects with the nearby Kai Kai Nature Trail for a longer outing. Canoeing on Katarapko Creek provides a complementary water-level perspective on the wetland ecosystem.

The Ngak Indau Wetland Trail is one of those walks where sitting still is as rewarding as walking. The bird hide, positioned at the heart of a restored Murray River wetland, provides front-row seats to the daily drama of waterbird life — feeding, fishing, preening, and flying — in a landscape that is being actively returned to ecological health. Forty minutes of walking, and as long as you like watching.
