Adelaide’s Favourite Waterfall Walk

For more than a century, the gorges, waterfalls, and woodlands of Morialta Conservation Park have provided Adelaide with a recreational escape just ten kilometres from the city centre. The Morialta Falls Valley Walk is the park’s most popular trail — a gentle 1.6-kilometre stroller-accessible path that follows Fourth Creek to the heart of Morialta Gorge, where water tumbles thirty metres from the top of the park’s most famous landmark, Morialta Falls. After autumn and winter rains, the falls are a spectacular sight — a white curtain of water cascading over sheer quartzite cliffs into the pool below.

The park’s three waterfalls along Fourth Creek are linked by an extensive network of walking trails that range from this easy valley walk to more challenging hikes along the ridgelines and plateaus above. Together they offer everything from a gentle family stroll to a full day of hiking and rock climbing in one of the most scenically dramatic landscapes within any Australian capital city. The park has been a protected area since 1915, when it was purchased as a pleasure ground for the people of Adelaide.

The Walk

The trail follows Fourth Creek upstream into the gorge, with the quartzite cliffs rising on either side as the valley narrows. The path is well-maintained and stroller-accessible, making it one of the most inclusive bushwalks in the Adelaide Hills. As the trail enters the gorge, the vegetation closes in — grey box eucalypts, SA blue gums, and native olive create a woodland canopy that filters the light and creates a cool, shaded environment even on warm days.

The first two falls are the grandest, each cascading over sheer quartzite cliffs that glow warm orange in the afternoon light. The rock pools along the creek provide habitat for small reptiles, frogs, and aquatic invertebrates, while honeyeaters and thornbills feed actively in the woodlands that cover the surrounding hills. To see the falls at their best, visit during spring or winter when water flow is strongest — in dry summers, the falls may slow to a trickle, though the gorge scenery remains spectacular regardless.

Planning Your Walk

Morialta Conservation Park is located at Woodforde in the Adelaide Hills, with well-signed access from the Adelaide CBD. Entry is free and the car park fills quickly on weekends and public holidays — arrive early for the best parking. The Valley Walk is flat and easy, suitable for all ages and fitness levels including families with prams. The park’s extensive trail network allows walkers to extend their visit with more challenging hikes to the second and third falls, the plateau lookouts, and the rock climbing areas.
