Above the Gorge: Views from Morialta’s Plateau

Morialta Conservation Park has been Adelaide’s favourite natural escape for over a century — a dramatic landscape of gorges, waterfalls, and rugged woodland just ten kilometres from the city centre. While most visitors head for the famous falls along Fourth Creek, the Morialta Falls Plateau Hike takes a different approach, climbing to the plateau above the gorge to deliver elevated views across the quartzite cliffs and the Adelaide Plains beyond. This 1.8-kilometre trail is short but rewarding, offering a perspective on Morialta that most visitors never see.

The park’s geology tells a story stretching back over 800 million years. The quartzite cliffs that form Morialta’s dramatic gorges were originally sandy sediments deposited on an ancient seabed, later compressed, folded, and uplifted by tectonic forces to create the rugged ridgelines of the Mount Lofty Ranges. The plateau above the gorge offers a bird’s-eye view of this geological drama — the creek cutting through ancient rock, the layered cliff faces, and the vegetation clinging to every available surface.

The Walk

The trail climbs from Centre Track to the plateau above the gorge, where the views open up across the park and beyond to the Adelaide Plains. The intermediate rating reflects the climbing sections — the trail gains elevation steadily, and some sections traverse rocky ground that requires attention underfoot. But the distance is short, and the reward is a panoramic view that puts the gorge system in perspective.

From the plateau, the scale of Morialta’s landscape becomes apparent. The gorge cuts deep into the ranges below, and the three waterfalls that draw visitors to the valley floor can be traced along the course of Fourth Creek. Rock climbers may be visible on the cliff faces — Morialta is one of Adelaide’s most popular climbing destinations — their tiny figures providing a sense of scale against the quartzite walls.

Planning Your Walk

Morialta Conservation Park is located in the Adelaide Hills suburb of Woodforde, just ten kilometres from the CBD. Entry is free. The Plateau Hike can be combined with the Valley Walk and other trails in the park’s extensive network for a half-day or full-day outing. The park is popular year-round, with the waterfalls at their best after autumn and winter rains. Carry water, wear sturdy footwear, and be aware of other trail users including rock climbers accessing the cliff faces.

The Morialta Falls Plateau Hike lifts you above the gorge to see Morialta as the birds see it — a deep cut through ancient rock, draped in native vegetation, with seasonal waterfalls threading down cliff faces that have been forming for hundreds of millions of years. It is a short walk to a long view, and a reminder that sometimes the best perspective on a landscape is from above.
