  • Naracoorte Caves Guided Tours — The World Heritage-listed Naracoorte Caves offer a range of guided cave tours, from introductory accessible tours to adventure caving through undeveloped passages. About the Limestone Coast for Guided Tours

The Limestone Coast is one of South Australia’s most geologically diverse regions. Millions of years of limestone deposition, volcanic activity, and sea-level changes have created a remarkable landscape of sinkholes, caves, crater lakes, and coastal cliffs. The region is also home to the Coonawarra and Padthaway wine regions, internationally recognised for their terra rossa soils and premium Cabernet Sauvignon.

Ewens Ponds, near Port MacDonnell, is one of Australia’s premier freshwater snorkelling and scuba diving sites — a series of crystal-clear spring-fed ponds connected by an underwater channel. The nearby Piccaninnie Ponds is another world-class diving destination. These sites are protected by SA National Parks and require a permit to snorkel or dive.

Planning Tips

Getting there: Mount Gambier is the Limestone Coast’s main hub — approximately 450km from Adelaide by road, or accessible by Rex Airlines flights. Robe, Naracoorte, and Penola are 3-4 hours from Adelaide.

Cave tour bookings: Naracoorte Caves guided tours should be booked in advance, particularly during school holidays. Adventure caving experiences have limited group sizes and fill quickly.

Diving and snorkelling: Ewens Ponds and Piccaninnie Ponds require a permit from SA National Parks. Water temperatures are cool year-round (around 14°C) — a wetsuit is essential.

Where to stay: See our Limestone Coast accommodation guide for stays near the trails and natural highlights.
