Cycling Tours
The Riesling Trail is one of South Australia’s most celebrated rail-trails — a 33km sealed path through the heart of the Clare Valley wine region, connecting Auburn to Clare via a series of cellar doors, towns, and scenic valley views. Guided cycling tours make it easy to combine riding with wine tasting at a relaxed pace.
- Tour de Vines – Riesling Trail Cycling Tour — A dedicated guided cycling tour along the Riesling Trail, combining riding with curated cellar door visits and local food experiences. Tour de Vines specialises in wine region cycling tours and brings together riding, tasting, and local knowledge into a seamless experience. One of the most popular guided cycling experiences in South Australia.
- Australian Cycle Tours – Clare Valley — Supported self-guided and guided cycling tours through the Clare Valley, with accommodation, luggage transfers, and route notes included. Ideal for those wanting to explore the Riesling Trail and surrounding wine country at their own pace with logistical support.
Walking Tours
The Clare Valley also has excellent walking, with trails connecting hilltop viewpoints, heritage sites, and vineyard valleys. The Riesling Trail itself is equally popular on foot as on bike.
- Big Heart Adventures – Clare Valley Walking Tours — Guided walking experiences through the Clare Valley, incorporating the Riesling Trail and surrounding hill country. Small-group tours with knowledgeable local guides, combining trail walking with wine region exploration.
About the Clare Valley for Guided Tours
The Clare Valley lies 130km north of Adelaide and is one of Australia’s most distinguished cool-climate wine regions, known internationally for its Riesling. The valley runs approximately 35km from Auburn in the south to Clare in the north, with the Riesling Trail threading through the landscape on a converted rail corridor.
The trail is mostly flat to gently undulating — very accessible for cyclists of all abilities. The Rattler Trail, a shorter spur near Watervale, adds extra riding options. Bike hire is available in Clare township from Cycle Clare, and several cellar doors have bike racks and welcome trail users.

Planning Tips
Best time to visit: Harvest season (February–April) is a highlight — cellar doors are at their busiest and the vineyards are in full colour. The Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend in May is a popular annual event. Spring (September–October) brings wildflowers and mild temperatures.
Bike hire: If you’re not on a guided tour, Cycle Clare in Clare township offers bike hire — very convenient for Riesling Trail visitors. Most guided cycling operators include bike hire in their packages.
One-way vs return: The Riesling Trail is best done one-way (Auburn to Clare or vice versa) rather than as a return trip. Guided tour operators typically arrange transport back to your starting point.
Where to stay: See our Clare Valley accommodation guide for stays near the Riesling Trail and cellar doors.
