Australia’s Best Beach

Vivonne Bay has been voted Australia’s best beach by multiple surveys, and the campground behind its dunes gives you the beach virtually to yourself. The bay is a sweeping crescent of white sand backed by low scrubland, with crystal-clear water that shifts from turquoise to deep blue. Camping here means waking to the sound of waves and walking barefoot to a beach that, even in peak season, rarely feels crowded.

The campground sits in low coastal scrub behind the dunes, offering basic facilities with toilets and BBQs. The bay is popular for fishing, swimming, and surfing, and the jetty provides a platform for fishing and crabbing. Seal Bay Conservation Park, home to a colony of Australian sea lions, is a short drive east along the coast.

Planning Your Stay

Vivonne Bay is located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island, approximately 75 kilometres from Kingscote. The campground is suitable for tents and campervans. Swimming is generally safe in the sheltered eastern end of the bay, but check conditions as the southern coast can produce strong rips. A general store operates seasonally near the jetty.
