Camping Among Wildlife

Snake Lagoon Campground in Flinders Chase National Park is one of the most wildlife-rich camping experiences in Australia. Kangaroo Island kangaroos — a distinct subspecies with darker, stockier builds than their mainland cousins — graze through the campground at dawn and dusk. Echidnas trundle past tents, brushtail possums emerge after dark, and the birdlife is extraordinary: crimson rosellas, black cockatoos, and the rare glossy black cockatoo are all regular visitors.

The campground is set in eucalypt forest near the western end of Kangaroo Island. The sites are well-spaced among the trees, providing privacy and shade. From here, the park’s major attractions — Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, and the Cape du Couedic lighthouse — are within easy driving distance. The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail also passes nearby.
