Murray River Bush Camping

Katarapko Creek is a peaceful backwater of the Murray River within Murray River National Park, where ancient river red gums line the banks and the only sounds are birdsong and the gentle current. The camping areas are strung along the creek, each offering flat, shaded sites beneath towering gums that are among the oldest and most impressive in the Riverland.

The creek and its surrounding floodplain are a haven for wildlife. Pelicans, cormorants, and herons fish the shallow waters. Kangaroos graze the flood-plain grasses at dusk. The creek is ideal for canoeing — the calm water and overhanging trees create a natural tunnel that feels a world away from the wider river. Katarapko is also part of a major environmental watering program to restore the health of the Murray’s floodplain forests.
