South Australia has plenty of trails ideal for horseriding and some of the best
can be found in our State Forests. At Kuitpo Forest, 45-minutes drive south of
Adelaide near the town of Meadows, there are several multi-use loop trails, each
20-kilometres long. There's also the Onkeeta Trail – an 8.5 kilometre loop trail
that has several picnic areas. Mount Crawford Forest, one hour's drive from Adelaide
in the northern Adelaide Hills, also has some good horse trails, including three,
20-kilometre multi-use loop trails.
When riding in forest, horseriders are asked to remember that Native Forest Reserves are set aside for the conservation of flora and fauna, and may contain isolated populations of rare or endangered species. Riders are asked to make a minimal impact on the environment and to be considerate of the flora and fauna, other trail users, property and residents.
In addition, South Australia's peak horse body, Horse SA, is currently developing a 170 kilometre horse trail that will link the McLaren Vale wine region to the Barossa, via the beautiful Adelaide Hills.
- Only competent riders and well-trained horses should use the trails.
- For your safety, wear ASA approved riding helmets and boots and ride clear of low overhanging branches.
- Riders should keep their horses under control at all times and give way to walkers and cyclists where necessary.
- Horses are to remain on the trail at all times, particularly in areas with valuable native vegetation.
- Please keep horses clear of native forest reserves (other areas that may be closed to horses are indicated by a symbol of a horse rider with a red slash).
